    Cellist, performer, composer, broadcaster and educator; the increasingly uncategorisable Zoë Martlew performs and records around the world. She is artistic director of the Saigon Chamber Music Festival in Vietnam, cello tutor for the NYO, and makes regular appearances as performer and commentator on TV and radio.

    Revue Z  features Zoë’s  theatrical compositions for cello, voice and pre-recorded soundtrack in an array of musical styles linked together by the shimmering virtuosity of her cello playing.

    Sounds from the Big White House: Oliver Knussen at 50 (2001)

    This special film was made to celebrate Oliver Knussen’s 50th birthday and includes original interview footage, videos from rehearsal and archive material.

    The composer talks about the perils of early fame, about meeting Stravinsky as a child, and demonstrates his amazing collection of musical mechanical toys in the eccentric domain of his home, the big white house. Music performed by the London Sinfonietta and BBC Symphony Orchestra includes excerpts from the Rite of Spring, Where the Wild Things Are and the Horn Concerto.

    Saxophonist and Bristol resident Andy Sheppard frequently collaborates with musicians from all over the world, drawing his influences from Brazilian percussion, Indian violin, English folk music, and of course lead figures of jazz, such as the late Gil Evans.

    Drummer Seb Rochford, French double bassist Michel Benita and Norwegian multi-instrumentalist Eiving Aarset all share Sheppard’s freely lyrical open-mindedness. They come together to perform music from his most recent ECM album, alongside improvisations and their own material.
